Literacy Centres in January

Exploring 2D Shapes

Children composed pictures using 2D shape pattern blocks. Look how creative we are!

Children are learning to recognize and describe 2D shapes. We practiced sorting shapes into groups based on the shape's features. For example, a square is like a rectangle because they both have four sides.

Children made 2D shapes using different materials (e.g., goeboards, playdough, popsicle sticks).

Students are learning to recognize 2D shapes in the environment.

We are working on composing and decomposing 2D shapes.

High Frequency Words

High frequency words are the words that appear most often in printed material. Children should be able to recognize these words quickly and accurately by the end of Senior Kindergarten. Children should also be able to spell these words accurately in their writing. Each week we take a few words from our daily shared reading and writing and add them to our classroom Word Wall.

Some children have their own flip books for extra practice with high frequency words.

Number Line

This number line was co-created with the students - everyone contributed! Students are learning that each number can be represented in many different ways. Also, writing numbers down on a number line makes it easy to tell which numbers are bigger or smaller.

Literacy Centres

Children are learning to identify letters and their corresponding sounds. Children are also learning to recognize some common sight words (sometimes we call these popcorn words because they pop out at us all the time when we are reading).

Math Centres

Children are learning that the last number in a count tells how many objects have been counted. They are learning to recognize numbers, and to sort, classify, and count the number of objects in a set. Children need lots of practice using numbers in situations where they can be successful and have fun!
