Students were shape detectives today and looked around the room for objects shaped like rectangles. Some of the things they found included a lunchbox, table, eraser, tissue box, number chart, box, clipboard, mat, flag, door, and window.

Hornworm Investigation
Following the students' interest in keeping and caring for class pets, we brought in a hornworm for the class to explore.
"I wonder what kind of pet it is?"
"I wonder what it eats?"
"I wonder if it's a baby or a grown up?"
"I wonder if it's a boy or a girl?"
"I wonder if it lays eggs?"
"I wonder why it needs green for its body?"
"I wonder why it's digging down?"
We are very excited about this new investigation!

New Class Pets
Since our nature walk to the forest, students have been very interested in learning about snails. One of the students brought in a snail that lives in water for us to explore. We are investigating what type of snail this is, and what kind of food it eats. Students wondered if the snail would be lonely, so we introduced a goldfish into the snails' habitat.
Some students placed seashells beside the snail. They noticed that the snail's shell has a similar pattern to the seashells.
One of our students found the book Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? on our bookshelf and said that the story reminded her of our new pet goldfish. We call this a text to self connection.
Patterns
A pattern has a core that repeats. Students are learning to create and extend patterns using colour, shape, size, action, position and sound.
Dramatic Play Centre - Birthday Party
In October, the students decided to turn our dramatic play area into a Birthday Party Centre. This new centre was co-created with students.
Class Surveys
Students have been conducting surveys to learn about each other's likes and preferences. Students are learning to record information using tally marks and to read the information they have collected (e.g., understanding the concept of more and less).
What Can We Recycle?
Students are learning to care for the natural environment by distinguishing what kinds of materials can be recycled.
