Dramatic Play Centre - Pizza Store

The students decided to turn the drama centre into a pizza store. We brainstormed ideas for our new centre. The students created a sign for the store, a lunch and dessert menu, price list, and a list of toppings and sides.

Ball Python

The children had an opportunity to visit with and pet a ball python. The next day one of the students found a photo of a ball python in a shape book at our reading centre. She excitedly made a connection to the pet snake. Making text to self connections is an important part of our reading program!

Hornworm Investigation

Following the students' interest in keeping and caring for class pets, we brought in a hornworm for the class to explore.

Some of the children's questions are:

"I wonder what kind of pet it is?"
"I wonder what it eats?"
"I wonder if it's a baby or a grown up?"
"I wonder if it's a boy or a girl?"
"I wonder if it lays eggs?"
"I wonder why it needs green for its body?"
"I wonder why it's digging down?"

We are very excited about this new investigation!

New Class Pets

Since our nature walk to the forest, students have been very interested in learning about snails. One of the students brought in a snail that lives in water for us to explore. We are investigating what type of snail this is, and what kind of food it eats. Students wondered if the snail would be lonely, so we introduced a goldfish into the snails' habitat.

Some students placed seashells beside the snail. They noticed that the snail's shell has a similar pattern to the seashells.

One of our students found the book Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? on our bookshelf and said that the story reminded her of our new pet goldfish. We call this a text to self connection.

Patterns

A pattern has a core that repeats. Students are learning to create and extend patterns using colour, shape, size, action, position and sound.

Science Experiment - Why Do Leaves Change Colour?

Some of our students wondered why leaves change colour in fall. They conducted a simple experiment and learned that leaves change colour because chlorophyll breaks down.

Dramatic Play Centre - Birthday Party

In October, the students decided to turn our dramatic play area into a Birthday Party Centre. This new centre was co-created with students.
